Forever two

春江水暖鴨先知 by Stanley Goh

The art above is a watercolour painting by Stanley Goh (吴世涌).  When I first saw it, I didn’t believe that it was a painting as it looks more like a photograph.

Though the following poems are not translations of either, they are both inspired by the painting.

Chinese poem by Ooi Ah Bah (黄基涵)

Forever two
Fluffy white feathers and golden yellow beaks,
sitting on the pebbled shore.
Looking out into separate horizons,
whilst keeping close to the one you adore.
Always two, and forever two,
when one, creates a broken heart.
Always two, and forever two,
even in death, they will never part.
